Borgo Grùgua

Borgo Grùgua (Borgo Modigliani) is located in the territory of Buggerru, in Sulcis-Iglesiente, and is an ancient mining and agricultural settlement closely linked to the history of the extractive activities of south-western Sardinia. The site is also known for its connection with the family of the painter Amedeo Modigliani, who marked a significant part of the history between the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.
The area was part of the vast property of the so-called “Salto di Gessa”, purchased in 1862 by the Modigliani family, which here managed mining activities related to the extraction of lead and zinc. The village was therefore a mixed production center, with both agricultural and mining functions, inserted in a territory then strongly industrialized.
According to historical sources, the young Amedeo Modigliani spent some summer periods in this area, an experience that would contribute to his artistic training. The subsequent failure of the family business in 1884 marked the beginning of the gradual abandonment of the estate.
