Domus de Janas Serra Nuarxis

The Domus de Janas of Serra Nuarxis is an important funerary complex of prenuragic Sardinia, dating back to the Neolithic and the age of the Copper, located in an archaeological context of the Sulcis-Iglesiente. The site represents a significant testimony to the ancient practices of hypogeic collective burial of the prehistoric communities of the island.
The complex consists of tombs carved into the rock, articulated in several interior environments that symbolically recall the structure of the houses. The domus de janas were used as funerary spaces for the deposition of the dead and for the performance of rituals related to the cult of the ancestors, according to typical traditions of prehistoric Sardinia.
The structures of Serra Nuarxis are distinguished by the integration with the natural rocky aging and the surrounding landscape, which enhances its archaeological character.
