Necropoli di Is Pirixeddus

The Punica Necropolis of Is Pirixeddus (Sant’Antioco) is one of the most important funerary complexes of the Phoenician-Punica era of south-western Sardinia, located in the urban area of the ancient city of Sulky. The site represents a significant testimony to the continuity of funerary use of the territory between the punica and Roman era.
The complex consists of numerous hypogetical tombs carved into the rock, organized in underground environments articulated with funerary chambers and corridors of access. The burials were intended for both individuals and households, according to the funerary traditions of the punica world, with subsequent reuse in Roman age.
The necropolis is part of an archaeological context of great importance, closely linked to the development of the ancient settlement of Sulky, one of the main Phoenician centers of Sardinia. The variety of tomb types and the stratification of the phases of use make the site essential for understanding the funerary practices of the ancient Mediterranean.
