Necropoli di Marchiana

The Necropolis of Marchiana (Villaperuccio) is an important archaeological site of south-western Sardinia, located in the territory of Sulcis-Iglesiente (09010 SU). The complex, dating back to the Neolithic and the Calcolitic, develops on the side of a hill in a dominant position, a short distance from the artificial lake of Monte Pranu, in a context full of prehistoric emergencies.
The site consists of a few dozen domus de janas, hypogetical tombs dug into the rock and used for collective burials. The funerary structures have articulated interiors, niches and ritual spaces that reflect the complex funerary and symbolic practices of the prenuratory communities of Sardinia.
Archaeological investigations have returned materials of great interest, including ceramic fragments attributable to the culture of the Campanian vase, an element that highlights contacts and cultural exchanges with other areas of the western Mediterranean during prehistory.
