Necropoli di Montessu

The Necropolis of Montessu is one of the most important prehistoric complexes of south-western Sardinia, located in the territory of Villaperuccio, in the heart of the Sulcis-Iglesiente. The site represents an extraordinary testimony of the prenuragic and nuragic culture, with continuous use from the Neolithic until the Bronze Age.
The necropolis consists of numerous domus de janas, hypogetical tombs carved into the rock, organized along the rocky walls of a hill. These funerary structures, often articulated in multiple environments, were used for collective burials and present architectural and decorative elements related to the spiritual beliefs of ancient communities.
The site stands out for the typological variety of tombs and for the presence of symbolic engravings and decorative motifs that testify to the complexity of prehistoric funeral rituals. The panoramic position of the necropolis further enhances its historical and landscape significance.
