Necropoli di San Benedetto

The Necropolis of San Benedetto is an important archaeological site of Sulcis-Iglesiente, located in 1961 in San Benedetto locality during agricultural works that also caused partial damage. The complex is one of the most significant testimonies of the Sardinian prehistory, with particular reference to the culture of Ozieri (IV millennium BC).
The site consists of five domus de janas, hypogetical tombs carved into the rock and intended for collective burials. Among these, the Tomb II, articulated in three environments, is of exceptional importance: it is in fact considered the only intact tomb attributable exclusively to the culture of Ozieri known in Sardinia.
The excavations have returned the remains of about 35–40 individuals, men and women tied to kinship, accompanied by a rich funerary kit consisting of wild, oxydian, green stone and ceramics typical of the Ozieri culture. Osteologic remains show a limited presence of dental pathologies.
