Piazza Carlo Emanuele III

The Piazza Carlo Emanuele III of Carloforte is the main access space to the historic center of the island of San Pietro, located directly in front of the tourist port and considered the real welcome point of the village for those arriving by sea.
The square is dominated by the monument to Charles Emmanuel III of Savoy, a historical figure fundamental to the birth of the Carlofortine community, since in 1738 he authorized the colonization of the island by Ligurian fishermen from Tabarka. The statue represents a strong identity and historical symbol of the country.
Known locally as “Pittaneddu”, the sculpture also preserves a particular historical story: the loss of the right forearm, which occurred in 1793 during an attempt to protect the monument from the French revolutionaries.
