Piazza Martiri

The Piazza Martiri of Sant’Anna Arresi is the main urban space of the town and represents a historical and archaeological unicum of the Sulcis bass, where modern life lives with testimonies dating back to prehistory. The square is in fact one of the few cases in Sardinia where a nuraghe is located integrated in the heart of the country, making it a true identity and cultural point.
The central element is the Nuraghe Arresi, dating back to the XV-XIV century B.C., of a “tancato” type, which dominates the urban space and testifies to the territorial continuity of the site since the nuragic age. This element makes the square an authentic open-air museum.
Next to the nuraghe is the religious complex formed by the Church of Sant’Anna, an ancient parish church, and the modern church, creating a strong contrast between historical and contemporary architecture. There is also the historical bell tower, an autonomous structure that characterizes the skyline of the square.
