Piazza Repubblica

The Piazza Repubblica di Carloforte is the main urban space of the historic center of the island of San Pietro, considered the true social and identity of the country. The square reflects the strong cultural heritage of Carloforte, where Ligurian traditions and Sardinian roots meet, creating a unique setting in the island landscape.
Its square structure is dominated by four imposing secular magnolioid ficus, which define the atmosphere and the arrangement of public space. Around the trees are the characteristics circular benches in wrought iron, called “baruffi”, always the meeting point of the local community.
The square is framed by important architectural and historical elements, including the Church of San Carlo Borromeo of the eighteenth century and historical palaces such as the Napoleon Palace and the Old Palace of 1773. From one of its accesses is also the scenic Via Solferino, one of the most recognizable steps of the village.
