Ponte Romano

The Roman Bridge of Sant’Antioco is an important work of Roman engineering located on the island of Sant’Antioco (Sulcis-Iglesiente, SU). The building is one of the most significant testimonies of the infrastructure built in Roman times for the control and connection of the territory, in a strategic area linked to the ancient settlements and commercial traffic of the western Mediterranean.
The structure is made of masonry with stone blocks, according to the construction techniques typical of Roman engineering, and was designed to ensure the passage on wetlands and canals, favoring the mobility between the different areas of the island and south-western Sardinia. The bridge is inserted in an environmental context historically linked to the salts and the ancient city of Sulky, an element that strengthens its functional and economic value.
