Sfinge di Is Loccis

The Sphinx of Is Loccis (also known as Sphinx of Su Bruncu) is located in the territory of San Giovanni Suergiu, in Sulcis-Iglesiente, and is one of the most peculiar natural rock formations of south-western Sardinia. This natural monument stands out for its striking shape reminiscent of a human figure or a sphinx carved in stone.
About ten meters high, the formation affects for the natural details that recall eyes, nose, mouth and a long neck, creating a silhouette reminiscent of the ancient Egyptian deities. The erosion of wind and atmospheric agents has shaped the rock over the centuries, giving rise to this curious conformation.
